In 2025, a groundbreaking archaeological discovery in Caiyue San Guo Tomb Complex, Xiangyang, Hubei Province, China, has shed new light on the "First Bronze Horse of China." Dated to the late Eastern Han Dynasty, this imposing bronze horse statue—standing 163cm tall, 163cm long, and weighing around 2tons—has been confirmed to belong to Zhang Ji, a prominent military general. What astounds researchers is the suspected mechanical transmission structure inside its belly, sparking fresh discussions about Zhuge Liang’s legendary "Wooden Ox and Floating Horse" (military logistics tools).

A team led by academician Wang Jianguo from the Chinese Academy of Engineering used 3D scanning and stress tests to analyze the structure. They found its crank-connecting rod system aligns remarkably with records in The Collected Works of Zhuge Liang describing the "four-legged Wooden Ox." A restored model even demonstrated the ability to carry 300 kg with four-legged linkage movement. However, debates persist: some mechanical history experts from Northwest University argue the design is impractical for logistics, suggesting it may be an improved wheelbarrow instead.

This bronze horse statue, blending features of Mongolian horses and Ferghana horses, also reflects cultural exchanges between the Central Plains and the Western Regions during the Three Kingdoms period—evidenced by nearby finds like an Indian-style elephant-trunk spout ewer.
