China’s iconic tourism symbol, the Bronze Galloping Horse (unearthed in 1969 from Leitai Han Tomb in Wuwei, Gansu), remains at the center of an academic debate in 2025: what should it be officially called? The popular nickname "Horse Treading on a Flying Swallow" faces challenges from new interpretations.

Scholar Weng Weihe proposes "Heavenly Horse Soaring Through Sky," arguing the statue’s prototype stems from Emperor Wu of Han’s ritual worship of "heavenly horses," and the bird under its hooves is likely a falcon or sparrowhawk—symbolizing "soaring through the clouds" divinity. Earlier, Professor Ning Qiang’s team from Capital Normal University suggested "Horse Treading on Xiongnu Eagle," linking it to Huo Qubing’s tomb sculpture "Horse Treading on a Xiongnu" as a memorial to Eastern Han military victories over the Xiongnu.

Gansu Museum, however, retains "Bronze Galloping Horse" as its official name, acknowledging diverse academic views. Data shows "Horse Treading on a Flying Swallow" has a Baidu Index of 876, far higher than "Heavenly Horse Soaring Through Sky" (321), reflecting public familiarity. Yet Expert in communication studies note "Heavenly Horse" better conveys historical depth for international audiences.
